    Local senior advises others:

“Make the effort” to community service and staying healthy

Tom Row’s philosophy is, “If you stay active and do for others, that’s the best way to live.” It’s a philosophy that has served this Oak Ridger well in his career, his dedication to community service and his own commitment to keeping himself physically active. .

Row retired from Oak Ridge National Lab in 1999 where he had worked as a nuclear scientist for 40 years, but he didn’t let retirement slow him down.  In fact, he became busier in his “retirement” than in his days as a full-time employee and was recognized for his service as a 2003 Covenant Health Platinum Award winner.

At the time of his nomination for the Platinum Awards, Row served as the president of the Anderson County United Way Board of Directors, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in many capacities, was chairman of American Museum of Science and Energy Foundation, volunteered with the UT Arboretum Society and the Love Kitchen, served as a team leader working with Oak Ridge’s Sister City, Obninsk, Russia, and had recently made a trip to Obninsk to help establish programs for their senior population. Additionally he has been active in youth-oriented programs, served in his church, and has recruited others to join him in his many activities, thus furthering the reach of his work.

Row maintains an active life and in January of 2010, he underwent joint replacement surgery so that he can continue to keep up with his busy schedule.  Orthopedic surgeon, Brian Edkin, MD, whom Row calls “a real class act,” replaced Row’s left knee at the Methodist Joint Replacement Center, and Row received post-surgery therapy through Methodist Therapy Services.

“That place really works,” says Row of the Joint Replacement Center.  “The specialization and the transfer of information as to what you should expect is just amazing. This was true with my surgeon, with my experience at the Joint Replacement Center and through my therapy with Methodist Therapy Services.“      Those folks in PT are just excellent and they know everything that’s going to happen – every muscle that’s going to hurt and for how long, and what’s not going to hurt.  I’ve moved on to what I call their post-graduate program – but I’m quick to tell people, you must make the effort in rehabilitation to reap the benefits.”

LeConte Medical Center is putting the HEALTH in Senior Health Fair

LeConte Medical Center sponsors its annual Senior Health Fair 9 a.m. – Noon on Friday, September 10 at the Fort Sanders Sevier Senior Center. The center is located at 1220 West Main Street, in Sevierville.
“We love being able to sponsor the Senior Health Fair every year at the Senior Center. This gives us the opportunity to design an event for the senior population in our community, focusing on the health issues that are important for them to stay active,” explained Garnet Angelos, MPH, Community Health Coordinator at LeConte. “It’s true, age is just a number, but it’s important that seniors stay on top of their numbers! Blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose level…all of these numbers can be life changing if they’re not monitored on a regular basis.”
The health fair will include free screenings such as: blood pressure, carotid ultrasound, 3-lead cardiac rhythm, vision, and grip strength.
A hemocult screening kit will be available for $2 at the event, and reduced-cost blood work will be available for participants. PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood tests and blood chemistry profiles are both available for $20. (It is recommended that you fast 10-12 hours before the blood chemistry profile for accuracy. All regular medications should be taken. Individuals with diabetes should consult with their physician prior to fasting.)
No appointments are required to attend the health fair. For more information call (865) 453-WELL.
